IHS is a college preparatory program for limited English proficient students in a multicultural educational environment. IHS gives preference priority to students of limited English proficiency who have been in the United States fewer than four years at the time of application. Once admitted, the students remain with the school for their entire high school careers. They receive a substantive high school/college curriculum taught with a content-based English-as-a-second-language approach. At the same time, students maintain and further develop their native language skills by engaging in peer-mediated instructional activities, using materials and textbooks in English as well as their native languages. http://ihsnyc.org/

Snowden International School has a blog page that provides information about news and events in the school, the nation's first public school system, founded in 1647. BPS serves nearly 57,000 pre-kindergarten through grade 12 students in 144 schools. In 2006, the Broad Foundation named BPS the best city school district in the US. Their teacher is using this page as a way to display awards and honors. It’s a great page of providing information and showing great things they are doing. http://allaboutbps.blogspot.com/2007_05_01_archive.html

K-12 Blogs

This is a blog for Mrs. LaBerge’s first graders. They use their blog to display newsletters, calendars, and upcoming information. There are also links for every subject in her class. The kids can learn online through this website Rock Hound Kids. She is also able to display classroom pictures and other fun stuff from the classroom. Its also a great way for the parents to see what is going on in the classroom from home. Mrs. Laberge's Class Blog

Mrs. Lowe’s middle school class loves to blog! Mrs. Lowe posts extra games in math and other subjects for her students to do. She also has “classroom countdowns”, announcements, assignments for students, and also her favorite books she recommends for extra reading. She says that although most of her fellow teachers say blogging is “messy” or “too much work”, she thinks it is a great way to get students to participate. I really love her page she has so much to offer the kids. Its also there as extra guided help if they don’t understand something. Mrs. Lowe's Class Blog.

ACCESS

ACCESS is a very helpful program that offers many courses across the state of Alabama. It stands for Alabama Connecting Classroom Educator and Students Statewide. It allows students to take courses on line from different teachers. The program allows students to choose electives and advanced classes that their school may not offer. This "distance learning" technique where teachers and students are not in the same classroom, are available as web-based classroom or video conferencing. Video conferencing can be a very good thing. It can provide more teachers, team-teaching between schools and developing teachers to be apart of another school culture.

Some of the challenges, however, would be organization, and keeping the students interested and feeling apart may be difficult. Students benefit from ACCESS in many ways. Hopefully Alabama will promote ACCESS more and more to help students and teachers. This system is probably something that I wouldn’t use because of elementary level that I want to teach, but I feel it’s great for middle and high schools.

Alabama Learning Exchange

The Alabama Learning Exchange (ALEX) is a website that can be used by anyone in the field of education. It is brought to you by the Alabama Department of Education. It is very useful and helpful for teachers in the classroom. It’s like a one-stop resource for educators. They can find whatever they need there. ALEX allows teachers make lesson plans and research other posted lesson plans. To design your own lesson plans you have to create an account, but it’s free. You can also search the course of study by grade level and find new ideas for the age group you teach.
I am actually already using ALEX to create and find ideas for lesson plans. One of my classes here at South is requiring me to create my own lesson plan. It’s really helpful because you can find worksheets to use in your classroom. You can also find questions that can be used on tests. The material and course of study for each grade level is listed. This allows you to see what your students have to learn.
